Dune Medical’s MarginProbe “Revolutionizing Breast Cancer Treatment”

The MarginProbe advantage and RF Spectroscopy featured as one of the most significant advancements in breast cancer treatment in recent years during I24 News.

At Dune Medical Devices, improving the standard of care around cancer surgery is what we strive for each and every day. In a segment featured during I24 News’ “Crossroads with Michelle Makori and David Shuster,” MarginProbe was highlighted as “one of the most significant advancements in breast cancer surgery in recent years.” Makori and Shuster recently sat with Dune Medical Devices CEO Lori Chmura as well as Dr. Susan Boolbol, Chief of Breast Surgery for Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York to learn more about RF Spectroscopy and the MarginProbe advantage.

Here are a few of the highlights.

Helping surgeons identify additional cancer in the operating room

Dune Medical’s technology, RF Spectroscopy, provides real-time tissue characterization systems to guide surgical and diagnostic decisions. We put unique clinically actionable information into the hands of surgeons while in the OR to help them make the best possible decisions for patient care.

“What’s amazing is our team’s ability to take this very sophisticated physics-based technology and translate it into a device that is very simple for the end user,” says Chmura. “Our device is now used in more than 100 hospitals in the US and 12 in Israel.”

“If there is a reading from the MarginProbe that there is cancer close to the edge, we can remove from that specific area while in the operating room,” says Dr. Boolbol. “Decreasing the likelihood of a second surgery.“

Dr. Boolbol says the technology allows Doctors to make sure they are not removing too much breast tissue, therefore, helping maintain the breast.

Given the reports that 1 in 8 women will be impacted by breast cancer at some point in their life, what do you think MarginProbe means for technology going forward? “I think every advance that helps physicians take care of women with breast cancer is big,” says Dr. Boolbol.
